A Successful Night Out

What a great turn-out we had last night! Over 50 concerned citizens along with the Cave Spring Fire Department, the Roanoke County Police, a couple of cute dogs and even cuter kids, showed up to celebrate National Night Out.

After chatting in the Valley Community Church parking lot, sampling some cookies as the kids checked out the police vehicle and fire truck, we all walked together through the neighborhood. People waved from their windows as we illuminated the dark streets, and cars quickly got out of our way ;) I do believe a good time was had by all, and I'm thankful to be part of such a great community.

Unfortunately I forgot to turn the flash on my phone camera (I'm still learning how to use it) so most of the pics didn't come out. If anyone has any photos they'd like to share on the blog please send them to me.

Thanks to everyone who made this night possible...

PRESS RELEASE from Office Orange

The Roanoke County Police Department is scheduled for an on-site assessment as part of a program to achieve accreditation by verifying it meets professional standards.

Administered by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), the accreditation program requires agencies to comply with state-of-the-art standards in four basic areas: policy and procedures, administration, operations, and support services.

As part of the on-site assessment, agency employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session Monday, August 17, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. The session will be conducted in the Board of Supervisor’s Meeting Room in the Roanoke County Administration Building located at 5204 Bernard Drive SW, Roanoke, Virginia.

Agency employees and the public are also invited to offer comments by calling (540) 266-2169 on Monday, August 17, 2009 between the hours of 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Comments will be taken by the Assessment Team.

Telephone comments as well as appearances at the public information session are limited to 10 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA’s standards. A copy of the standards is available at the Roanoke County Police Department at 5925 Cove Road, Roanoke, Virginia. Local contacts are Lieutenant Scott Smith at (540) 777-8696 or Officer Natalie Maxey (540) 777-8644.

Anyone wishing to submit written comments about the Roanoke County Police Department’s ability to comply with the standards for accreditation may send them to the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. at 10302 Eaton Place, Fairfax, Virginia 22030-2215.

National Night Out

National Night Out Logo Pictures, Images and Photos

Dear Neighbors,

Come and join us for the National Night Out on August 4th. The “National Night Out” is an annual event that allows communities to come together to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, to generate support for anticrime programs, to strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community relationships, and ultimately, to send a message that our neighborhood is organized and ready to fight back!

We will gather in the parking lot of the Valley Community Church located at 5000 Carriage Drive at 8:30 PM then walk through the neighborhood around 9 PM. This is great opportunity to meet your neighbors and enjoy some light refreshments. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

If anyone would like to bring lemonade and/or cookies, I would greatly appreciate it! I am also looking for 3 or 4 bails of hay for the trailer that will carry anyone who wants to participate, but feels as though they cannot walk the route.

Thanks again for your help and involvement!
